Today, Leica Camera has released firmware version 3.6 for the Leica SL full-frame mirrorless camera. The firmware primarily improves compatibility with non-Leica L-mount lenses – an excellent demonstration of Leica's commitment to their recently-announced L-Mount Alliance with Panasonic and Sigma.

Additionally, firmware 3.6 also reduces aperture drive noise while zooming with either the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm or the APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm. It is worth noting that this is accomplished by updating the lens' firmware – the lens firmware update is stored inside SL firmware 3.6. Simply mount your lens to the SL once the new camera firmware is installed, and the camera will update the lens' firmware automatically.

You can download the firmware direct from Leica here: SL Firmware 3.6

The official firmware notes, from Leica:

  • Improvement on compatibility with existing and upcoming lenses from L-Mount Alliance partners.
  • Improvement on compatibility with L-Mount lenses that are equipped with an AF/MF selection on the lens.
  • Improvement on compatibility with L-Mount lenses that are equipped with an OIS mode switch on the lens.
  • For the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90 f/2.8-4 ASPH lens FW 1.2 reduces the noise from aperture drive while zooming.
  • For the APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280 f/2.8-4 lens FW 1.1 reduces the noise from aperture drive while zooming.

Today, Leica Camera has introduced the M-E (Typ 240), their most affordable digital M camera to date. The M-E (Typ 240) has all of the same features and functions as the well-loved M (Typ 240), with a 2GB buffer from the M-P (Typ 240) and a unique anthracite grey paint on the top and bottom plates.

A Tried and True Design

If this feels a bit familiar, it’s because Leica has gone down a similar road before. Back in 2012, Leica launched the M-E, based on the M9 with a few tweaks, including the anthracite grey finish we see today on the M-E (Typ 240).

More commonalities between the original M-E and the M-E (Typ 240) are silver control accents and the removal of the camera’s model designation from the front, similar to Leica’s “P” models. The M-E has proven to be a bit of a cult-classic, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the M-E (Typ 240) follow a similar path in the years to come.

The Ideal Starter M

Priced at $3,995, the M-E (Typ 240) is the perfect entry point for those looking to get into their first digital M, without getting into something pre-owned. A full 2 year warranty is included with the M-E (Typ 240), as it is with all of Leica’s current digital M cameras.

Of course this is not just a repainted M (Typ 240). Thankfully, a major improvement Leica introduced first on the M-P (Typ 240) is seen on the M-E (Typ 240): a 2GB buffer. When we tested the M-P in 2014, we found that the increased buffer allowed a continuous burst of 34 images with a fast SD card, versus only 13 on the standard M. I expect the M-E (Typ 240) to behave similarly.

Shipping Soon

Initial deliveries of the M-E (Typ 240) are expected in late July 2019. You can pre-order by calling Leica Store Miami at 305-921-4433, emailing  info@leicastoremiami.com or clicking the link below:

Today, Leica Camera has launched the first special edition of the M10-P digital rangefinder in the USA: the Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari,' along with a matching (but separately sold) lens: the Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari.' The M10-P Edition ‘Safari' is limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide, and the lens to just 500 pieces. This is a break from Leica's past Safari Edition releases, which always included a silver chrome lens as a set. The most recent Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari Set, for example, included a Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH in silver chrome; there was no way to get the camera body on its own. Personally I welcome this change, because Leica is not forcing a lens on someone who might already have that focal length in their kit. With Leica's wide range of silver chrome lenses, there are many options available to suit your particular need.

M10-P Edition ‘Safari'

Painted in the classic Safari color, called “olive green” by Leica, the M10-P Edition ‘Safari' features silver chrome accents, silver rear buttons and a green leatherette body covering. The top plate prominently displays the classic Leica script logo in white paint, as with the standard-production M10-P models.

The top plate of the M10-P Edition ‘Safari' shows the Leica script logo in white paint and silver-chrome accents.

It's easy to miss, but the MADE IN GERMANY engraving is painted in the body color on the M10-P Edition ‘Safari,' unlike the regular M10-P.

A minor, but nonetheless interesting change is the “MADE IN GERMANY” engraving on the back of the camera is not painted in a contrasting color, unlike the white lettering on the black M10-P, or black lettering on the silver M10-P. This is a small but appreciated touch which makes the camera just a bit more special. A brown leather carrying strap and SD/credit card wallet are included as well.

Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari'

If you do want to get your hands on a matching lens, the Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' is the first ever M-system lens painted in Leica's olive green color. Based on the venerable and compact Summicron-M 50mm f/2 lens, this is sure to be a future collectible (especially with only 500 pieces being produced). The focal length indicator and feet distance scale are both painted in contrasting red. If you already have a prior Safari edition Leica, this lens would pair perfectly, although I can't imagine it would look too good on anything else! Leica's press release below is a bit vague as to whether the lens barrel is brass or aluminum, but we'll be sure to update this post with the right specification when we have it.

Press Release

Leica Camera is excited to announce new special editions of the esteemed Leica M10-P camera body and the renowned Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 lens, both being made available and sold separately in ‘Safari' Editions. The eye-catching special finish of olive green ‘Safari' cameras from Leica have a long and storied tradition, dating back to the early years of the M-System.

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari' camera body will be limited to 1,500 units worldwide and includes a carrying strap and SD/credit card holder in Brandy-colored leather. Availability will begin immediately. The Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' lens marks the very first time in Leica's history that a Leica M-Lens will be offered in the legendary olive green enamel finish. Only 500 of these lenses will be made available, beginning in mid-February.

The first Leica cameras with this high-quality enamel finish in olive green were originally designed and constructed for military use in the field. What began in 1960 with the Leica M1 “Olive” manufactured for the German armed forces went on to become a story of legends in the camera world. While the subsequent olive green M3 and M4 cameras were manufactured exclusively for military use, 1977 saw the appearance of the olive green Leica R3 ‘Safari' camera in response to increasing demand from private customers.

This special edition was followed by a series of popular successors: the M6 TTL ‘Safari' in 2000, the M8.2 ‘Safari' in 2008 and, in 2015, the M-P (Typ 240) ‘Safari'.

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari' camera and the Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' premium lens, both finished in olive green enamel, represent a perfect symbiosis of functionality, legacy, and design. All visible metallic components of the camera and lens are elaborately machined from solid brass. The premium baked enamel finish in olive green makes the camera and lens resistant to handling blemishes and scratches and provides enduring protection against external influences such as chemicals and UV light.

The M10-P Edition ‘Safari' looks fantastic with the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH in silver attached.

Pricing and Availability

The Leica M10-P Edition “Safari” is priced at $8,450 and is available immediately. The Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition “Safari” comes in at $2,750 with deliveries expected to begin mid-February. You can order by clicking the relevant link below, emailing info@leicastoremiami.com, or calling 305-921-4433.

Last month, Leica launched their latest variant of the Q: the Leica Q-P, which is the first time that their legendary “P” designation has been applied to a fixed-lens camera. Expectations are high whenever a new “P” model is launched, and given the Q's immense popularity since it was announced in June of 2015, this particular release was no exception.

While simple enough to read through the launch material and check out the official product photos (which we posted about here: Leica Q-P in Stealth Matte Black Released), I wanted to dive a bit deeper into the Q-P to really see what makes this camera special. If you're not familiar with the Q (which the Q-P shares all other functions and features with) you can check out our in-depth review here: Leica Q (Typ 116) Review: A Full-Frame Mini M.

It's hard to show just how different the finish is on the Q-P from other Leica cameras. In this close-up you can just make out the slight texture in the paint.

Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on a Leica Q-P, no small feat given their relative rarity, and now I can see what it's all about. Let's get the obvious out of the way first. The Q-P is more expensive than the Q. $500 more to be precise ($4,995 versus $4,495 as of this writing). What exactly are you getting for your $500? Leica throws in a spare battery with the Q-P, which retails alone for $95. You also get a lovely brown leather Leica neck strap, which is actually unique to the Q-P but similar straps have sold for about $125 from Leica in the past. Now the price gap between the Leica Q-P and the Q has narrowed to $280.

The brown leather strap included with the camera is quite nice, and is exclusive to the Leica Q-P (you can't buy it on its own). It's adjustable from 41-44 inches.

The Paint

The major new “feature” for the Q-P is the matte black finish. It's actually quite challenging to show the finish properly in photographs. Especially because it has a very subtle, but noticeable, texture to it that really needs to be experienced firsthand. When the Q-P was launched, we immediately drew a comparison to another special edition Leica, the M Monochrom “Stealth Edition” which also sported this matte black paint. But now that I have both cameras side by side (thanks to a very generous Leica enthusiast willing to share), it's actually interesting to see that the finish on the Q-P is even more matte than the Stealth Edition. I'm not sure if this is because the finish itself is different, or because the Q-P's body is made from different material, but the finish on the Q-P is the most matte finish I've ever seen on any Leica model. It barely reflects any light, especially compared to other finishes.

This photo may be ugly, but using a direct, on-camera flash you can clearly see just how matte the finish on the Q-P (bottom-right) is. On top is the Monochrom Stealth Edition, and bottom-left is the regular Q.

And for a real Leica geek like myself, an exciting part of this new finish is that, of course, the Q-P's lens hood and lens cap are in the same matte paint as the camera body. These parts are available to purchase separately if you want to add a bit of matte finish to your regular Q. Sadly, the hot shoe cover has not been changed from the Q.

Other Key Improvements

New finish aside, the major functional change for the Q-P is a redesigned power switch and shutter button assembly. It's no secret that on the regular Q and its variations, the low-profile nature of the power switch made it a bit tricky to change between OFF, S and C (especially when you're not looking at the camera). The Leica Q-P's switch is 50% taller (3mm on the Q versus 4.5mm on the Q-P) and 10% wider (17.3mm versus 15.7mm). I knew there was a reason I kept a micrometer in my desk drawer!

The power switch on the Q-P has been dramatically improved with a 50% height increase.

The redesigned Q-P shutter button will be familiar to M10 and CL shooters. In this photo the 10% width increase of the switch is also clearly visible.

What you can't easily tell from the official photos is that the end of the power switch on the Q-P actually sticks out just a bit over the edge of the camera body, whereas the switch on the Q sits flush. This small adjustment, combined with the taller and wider switch, makes it far easier to move the switch precisely between its three positions. It feels more like the power switch on the M10 or CL. There is not much I would change from the Q given the chance, but the power switch would be at the top of that short list. Thankfully, Leica brought this enhancement to the Q-P.

On the left you can see how the power switch of the Q-P sticks out just a bit further than the Q's switch, which makes it far easier to engage the desired position between OFF, S & C.

Classic “P” Styling Cues

Cosmetic changes beyond the matte paint are in line with what we would expect from a P model. Namely, the red Leica dot logo has been removed from the front of the camera, The LEICA Q designation on the top plate has been replaced with the classic Leica script logo, along with LEICA CAMERA WETZLAR GERMANY (which has been relocated here from the back of the regular Q), and the previously blank hot shoe carries the LEICA Q-P logo. The crisp white lettering on the top plate contrasts beautifully with the flat matte paint on the camera. A final classy touch is the yellow numbering on the lens has been changed to red.

The Q-P has the classic Leica script logo on the top plate, along with branding on the hot shoe.

Previously located above the rear LCD, the LEICA CAMERA WETZLAR GERMANY text has been moved to the top of the Q-P, giving the back of the camera more discreet appearance.

The feet distance scale and focal length indicator on the Q-P's lens is now in red font, versus yellow on the Q.

The Value Question

The real question of course…is the Q-P worth the extra $500 over the regular Q? I think the obvious answer is yes, as long as you are a fan of the matte black finish. I realize that the classic “black paint” look has a lot of fans, but personally I like the discreet, slick look of the Q-P. This follows Leica's trend of “black chrome” cameras (like the M10 and both versions of the Monochrom) which are also a matte black finish, but takes it a few steps further. The $500 premium over the standard Q is easy to justify, considering you are getting over $200 in additional accessories, plus the Q-P will certainly retain its value better than the Q, as it will inevitably be produced in considerably smaller numbers.

The best news? The Leica Q-P is now available at Leica Store Miami. You can order by clicking the link below, emailing info@leicastoremiami.com, or calling 305-921-4433.

Leica Camera is pleased to announce a special edition of its full-frame mirrorless Leica Q camera, the Leica Q “Khaki.” Featuring a silver-anodized body wrapped in a premium khaki-colored leather trim, the Leica Q “Khaki” is reminiscent of the classic Leica M ‘Safari' models with its khaki-colored silk screen lettering of the classic Leica script on the top plate and color-matched carrying strap.

The special edition of the Leica Q “Khaki” is limited to 495 units worldwide.

The technical specifications of the Leica Q “Khaki” are identical to those of the standard model of the Leica Q. Thanks to its particularly fast Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens, the camera is perfect for photography in any available light situations, for street photography, architecture and landscapes. Earlier this summer we wrote about Nitecore's range of Leica-compatible USB battery chargers. There was one major problem with the charger lineup at the time though: nothing for the M10! Until now. At last, Nitecore has released a USB battery charger for the M10 (and M10-P of course) which has a few cool features that users will appreciate.

If you're not completely familiar with what makes these chargers so useful, I'd recommend taking a look at my previous post, where I break down everything you need to know about Nitecore USB chargers: Nitecore USB Chargers for Leica Batteries Offer Maximum Flexibility.

Features and Functions

As its name suggests, the Nitecore USB Dual Battery Charger ULM10 Pro for Leica M10 & M10-P charges two M10 batteries at once via USB cable. Unlike Nitecore's other chargers which feature a short, built-in USB cable that isn't really long enough by itself for much, the ULM10 Pro has a removable micro USB cord. This means you can use a charging cable that is the right length for your particular need, if the 30 inch (12 cm) included cable isn't ideal. I've been using the Anker PowerLine+ Micro USB Cable with good luck, thanks to its super-durable construction. There is a small channel in the back of the charger to seat the cable during use which lets the charger sit flat.

Size and Weight

Compared to the “stock” M10 charger that comes with a new M10/M10-P, the Nitecore ULM10 Pro is not too much bigger. Here is a chart comparing the key dimensions and weight:

Nitecore ULM10 Pro Leica BC-SCL 5
Length 125mm 91mm
Width 70mm 69mm
Height 29mm 27mm
Weight 97 grams 110 grams

As you can see, the main difference is that the ULM10 is 34mm longer than Leica's charger, which makes sense when you consider that it charges two batteries instead of one. Thankfully it comes in a bit lighter. It would be nice to see Nitecore also make a single battery charger for the M10, similar to their other models, so hopefully that's something we'll see at some point.

Charging Capability

The ULM10 Pro features “QC 2.0” technology, which allows it to charge two batteries simultaneously when attached to a compatible power supply. You'll know you are getting the full QC 2.0 potential of the charger when “Quick Charge” shows up on the LCD screen. Otherwise, one battery is charged at a time. As with Nitecore's other chargers, the LCD screen will tell you how much current is flowing into each battery, which informs you how close you are to reaching the ULM10 Pro's maximum current of 1,200mA (one battery, QC 2.0) 800mA (two batteries, QC 2.0) or 700mA (either one or two batteries without QC 2.0).

The “Quick Charge” icon indicates you are getting the ULM10 Pro's maximum charge input.

From my testing, a fully drained M10 battery charges in two hours at 700 mA using the Nitecore USB Wall Outlet Power Adapter. This is actually a bit slower than Leica's own charger, which performs the same task in about 1 hour and 40 minutes. That makes sense when you read the specs on the Leica charger, as it has a maximum current of 1000 mA. Using an Anker USB Adapter that is QC 2.0-compatible, I was able to reduce the charge time of one battery to 1 hour and 25 minutes from completely dead to 100%. That is quite impressive, especially since it's rare I let my batteries get to 0%, which means charging from even 10-15% would take an hour or less to full.

Final Thoughts

There is no doubt I'll never be bringing the standard M10 charger with me anywhere again. With its ability to charge two batteries, provide detailed information about the battery status and flexibility of charging sources, the ULM10 Pro will have a permanent place in my M-system kit. Priced affordably at $60 (the same as Nitecore's other Leica-specific chargers), the ULM10 Pro is available now at Leica Store Miami:

Read on for a detailed breakdown of the changes and improvements:

Improved Video Operation Start/Stop Video recording via Leica Cable Release S (order no. 16029) when Video Live View is active

This one is pretty simple, and nice to have. When the Leica S-Cable Release is attached to your camera, it can also be used to start and stop video recording in addition to firing the shutter for still photos.

Additional Photo Mask (3:1) for better composing. Supported by Adobe Lightroom

The 3:1 aspect ratio is clearly visible in live view and playback

The Photo Masks menu is where you choose the new 3:1 Pano setting

If you are looking to shoot a REALLY wide aspect ratio, now you can. Personally I prefer to do this kind of cropping in post production, but depending on your needs this may be a nice feature to have.

Maximum Exposure Time extended to 125 seconds

Now we are getting into the good stuff! Previously, at ISO 100 the longest exposure available on the S007 was 60 seconds. Firmware 5.0.0.0 increases that to 125 seconds. Do keep in mind that as you increase ISO, your access to these longer speeds decreases. Here's a handy chart that breaks it down:

ISO Max Time
100 125 sec
200 90 sec
400 45 sec
800 24 sec
1600 12 sec
3200 9sec
6400 4 sec
12800 2 sec

Center Marking for Live View Autofocus field

The smaller crosshair in the center is new. It stays in the center. You can see to the upper right the larger crosshair that represents your autofocus point which you can move around freely.

When working in live view, the autofocus spot for the S007 is a small white crosshair. When you start moving it around the frame, it can be tricky to try and re-position it dead center again. An even smaller crosshair is added in the new firmware which is fixed to the center, making it easy to bring your focus point back there.

Customize Controls for Front Wheel Direction

Now you can reverse the direction of the top dial in the Customize Controls menu.

The “front wheel” in this case is the top dial on the camera, primarily used for adjusting your shutter speed. This new control allows you to reverse the direction of that dial, should you so choose.

Bug Fixes

In addition to the above listed new features, a few bug fixes are also listed:

    • Bug fix: GPS Tag was sometimes corrupt within a picture sequence
    • Bug fix: under some circumstances the mirror got stuck after a series of 200 to 400 exposures
    • Bug fix: under some circumstances the camera produced color patterns with the Leica Vario-Elmar-S 3.5-5.6 / 30-90mm ASPH

Today, Leica has released new firmware versions for both the M10 and M10-P digital rangefinder cameras. The firmware specifically allows the cameras to function via WiFi with the new Leica FOTOS app, which is being released next month. Compared to working with the Leica M app, this update makes it far easier to connect the M10 to your iOS or Android device wirelessly. You can learn more about the new app here: Leica Releases New FOTOS App.

Disclaimer: If you are currently using the Leica M iOS app to control your M10 via WiFi, this new firmware will no longer allow you to do so. You will not be able to use WiFi on your M10 until the new Leica FOTOS app is released.

The firmware is available for download here:

Leica M10 firmware version 2.6.5.0

Leica M10-P firmware version 2.6.5.1

Previously, the M10's WiFi connection process was quite tedious. You had to manually create and enter a network password, unlike most of Leica's other WiFi-enabled cameras that have a QR code you scan to automatically set up the network on your iOS (and now Android) device. The new firmware makes the process much simpler. There are no longer any options or settings in the camera's WLAN menu to complicate the process. Simply select WLAN in the main menu, and the camera automatically activates the WiFi. Use the FOTOS app to scan the displayed QR code and you are connected. I can't think of a way this could be easier!

A Look at What's New

The main menu on the M10 has not changed, however once you go into the WLAN menu is where the update is obvious.

The new firmware, on the left, brings up a QR code automatically when you enter the WLAN menu. No settings required! Compare this to the previous M10 firmware (on the right) where you had to set the network up manually.

Leica's official release notes break down the changes more specifically:

Compatible with the new Leica FOTOS app
-Allows to connect smartphone to Leica camera.
QR Code for all Leica Cameras
-Easy pairing of smartphone and Leica cameras.
1-Click Connection with Function Button
-WLAN starts without submenus on FN button.
Fixed WLAN name and password
-No submenus for setting a connection mode.
No submenus for mode settings
-No submenus for setting a connection mode.

Video Walk-through

We've put together a short video to walk you through the full update process, step-by-step.

To install the firmware on your Leica M10, follow these steps:

  1. Insert a fully charged battery into the camera
  2. Download the new firmware file to your computer
  3. Prepare the SD card for installation:
    1. Make sure that the card contains at least 200 MB of free disk space
    2. It is recommended to format the card inside the camera before continuing
    3. Download the new firmware file to your computer
    4. Copy the firmware file to the root directory of the SD card
    5. Eject the SD card properly from your computer
  4. Insert the SD card into the camera and switch the camera on
  5. Go to Main Menu / Camera Information / Camera Firmware
  6. Press “Yes” to confirm and start the process;
    1. Please confirm to save your current profiles to SD card before proceeding with the update
    2. Wait until the update installation is completed
    3. Restart the camera, do not eject the SD card
  7. Please load your last profiles from SD card after the first startup
  8. The update process is complete

Today at Photokina, Leica has announced the S3, the highly anticipated successor to the S (Typ 007) medium format digital SLR. Details are relatively light at this point as the Leica S3 is slated for delivery in Spring of 2019. What we do know today is that the S3 will feature a brand new, Leica-specific 64 megapixel CMOS sensor, nearly double the 37.5 megapixel resolution found on previous S cameras. This new sensor has a maximum ISO of 50,000 and, significantly, can capture full-frame medium format 4K video. As with the S (Typ 007), the S3 features Wi-Fi, GPS, full weather sealing, and a durable magnesium body.

This is great news for the S-system. Near the end of last year, we conducted a survey about what S users wanted in the next model. You can check that survey out and see the results here: Thoughts on the Next Generation Leica S. When it came to resolution, the majority of users wanted 60 megapixels and the 64 megapixel sensor in the S3 fits that requirement perfectly. I've seen a number of extremely large prints from the S (Typ 007) that look incredible, so I'm quite excited to see what the S3 will produce.

Another top requested feature was an improvement in high ISO capability. The S3's maximum ISO of 50,000 is a 2-stop improvement over the 12,500 maximum ISO of the S (Typ 007). Knowing what the 007 is already capable of at higher ISO's (check out Night Shooting with the Leica S (Typ 007) for that), I can imagine that the S3 will be even more useful in hand-held, low light shooting situations.

More on the S3 still to come

David Farkas is on-site at Photokina. He was at the press event and will be heading to the Leica booth tomorrow at the show to see about getting hands-on with a prototype S3 camera. He'll also be sitting down with Stephan Schulz, head of professional products for Leica, as well as Toni Felsner, product manager for the S camera. Hopefully, we'll get some more details tomorrow. So, keep checking Red Dot Forum for updates as we learn them.

Leica's official release

Leica Camera presented the upcoming Leica S3 at Photokina today. This announcement comes ten years after Leica Camera first introduced a new medium format camera system, the Leica S2. The S2 was followed by the Leica S (Typ 006) in 2012 and the Leica S (Typ 007) in 2015. Along the way, the S-System was further improved with changes to the handling concept, range of functions, completion of the lens system, switch from CCD to CMOS sensor technology and the launch of the Maestro II processor.

The features of the Leica S3 include a 64 MP CMOS Sensor designed exclusively for Leica, ISO up to 50,000, full frame medium format Cine 4K Video System, integrated Wi-Fi and GPS. The Leica S3 is constructed with exceptionally high quality and resilient materials including a magnesium body, a Corning® Gorilla ®Glass cover plate for the monitor screen and a lens bayonet made from durable stainless steel. The camera has numerous seals that protect it from dust and splashes. Sales for the Leica S3 will start in Spring 2019.

Today, Leica Camera has released firmware version 3.3 for the SL (Typ 601) full-frame mirrorless camera. In addition to adding compatibility with the new Leica FOTOS app for wireless control (learn more about the new app here), firmware 3.3 adds a few new settings and tweaks for both power saving and auto review.

The first major change is a new option under Auto Review called “Shutter pressed.” This allows the image you just took to remain on the screen (or in the viewfinder) for review as long as you continue to hold the shutter after you've taken the shot. Personally I always just turn Auto Review to “off” but for some users this setting may be handy.

Power Saving Mode was introduced in firmware 3.2 as a way for users to stretch the life of the camera's battery. With this setting turned on in 3.2, the camera would automatically power off after 3 seconds of inactivity which was simply way too quick! This has been lengthened to 10 seconds in firmware 3.3, which in theory will still help squeeze every last drop out of a battery if you don't have a fully charged spare nearby.

The new firmware can be downloaded here: Leica SL Firmware 3.3 – (It’s a big file at 112MB, so be sure the LFU file is 100% downloaded before you copy it to your SD card!) Remember, you must have a FULLY charged battery in your SL when doing the firmware update, as the process can take up to 10 minutes to complete the update. Be sure your SD card with firmware is in slot 1 (the top slot). If you need help updating, scroll down to see our step-by-step video tutorial.

The official release notes, from Leica:

Power Saving Mode
-Changed functionality: While not using electronic viewfinder or any operating elements, the camera will go into ‘Auto Power Off’ after a fixed amount of time.
-Changed the timing from 3 to 10 seconds.
Auto Review
-Additional option ‘Shutter pressed’ has been added to Auto Review settings
-Option ‘Off’ no longer enables the camera to show Auto Review while shutter release is
pressed.
